This marvelous location has been sitting at the top of my favorites list ever since I first landed at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport several years ago. The basic plan in my head was a month long, typical touristy getaway with a good friend before I had to slip back into work life. But little did I know what the city had in store for me, while it secretly led me into the eye of another adventure.
That one-month stretched into one eye-opening year that I’ll never forget. But as many good things in life eventually come to an end, my time in the city was drawing to a close, while at the same time I found myself peeking into my life’s next episode. Sailing away from the safe harbors, I took a glimpse back into the city that had kindly rewired my thought process, only to bid me farewell so I could further spread my wings and widen my perspective in this fascinating world. Although I did leave, I never really left.
Fast-forward a few years and my travels were leading me back to my favorite place. I felt like the luckiest girl alive. The sudden ending of my job had me purchasing two one-way tickets to the famous BCN. My man–check, passports–check, over-weight luggage–check, passports–check again, adventure here we come! My head was overflowing with a list of sights to revisit, places to eat and music festivals to get my dance on; I was like a crazy dog running in circles chasing my tail– uber excited!
So Here Are The 8 Reasons Why I Love This City
1. Moving Anonymously
The feeling of aimlessly drifting, exploring the streets with no map and only my intuition switched on, has always played a part in my travels. Being a stranger and not feeling the need to know anyone, while remaining open to meet new people is a great state of mind to be in when living in a big city.
Also having no obligations or appointments gives me a great sense of freedom and relaxation. It fills me up with the simple joy of being alive.
2. Sea Things Close To Me
Whenever I meet the coast my body and mind slow right down. Inhaling a few deep breaths of salty air calms me before I dive back into the hustle and bustle of the cosmopolitan playground.
The endless wandering through the city’s streets with sore feet and heavy camera gear forever fascinates me.
It’s like a labyrinth filled with amusing characters, fairytale-like buildings and enough arty imagery to constantly distract the eye.
Must. Chase. Bubbles.
4. Creating Creativeness
Barcelona is one of those cities that will uncover the creativeness within you.
The city reminded me of my love for photography, my ability to draw, how to dance salsa (in the kitchen) and whip up some Spanish yumminess– as in chopping up some chorizo and cheese…
5. Happy Pills
Find this store and put together a nice customized jar of jellies, stuffing it full with different shapes, colors and flavors. These treats resemble the abundance of variety you can find throughout the city, it’s like a playground for all ages.
There’s enough funky cafes, restaurants and markets to forever satisfy the sensors and dozens of shows and concerts to keep your entertainment levels stable.
N.B. If you happen to visit the Happy Pills store, then don’t hold back! You might never come across so many goodies in one place, and yes they do work, they do make you happy!
6. Park Life
You can’t beat getting out of the house for a day with your favorite book, or mate, picking up some tapas, and maybe a cheeky bottle of vino, then making your way to your favorite park, mine being the Parc del Laberint d’Horta, not too far from the centre. It’s not the easiest of finds but definitely worth it when you get there. This secret garden, undiscovered by many, is the perfect place to “get lost,” but not too lost–that wine’s getting warm.
Time to go find that pillow-like patch of grass and get busy relaxing.
7. Leakfast, Dunch and Minner
Breakfast at lunch, lunch at dinner and dinner at midnight. It sounds far from the norm but I love it! It’s a great change from the “normal” time schedule I live in. But even though my time frame gets shifted, my 2pm coffee will always be “my morning coffee”, my eyes will still be sleepy and my morning hair will still be crazy. Why not right? It’s still the morning, isn’t it? Who knows? Who cares…
